Bastien Piano Instruction Method Books

The Bastien piano method books rank among the most widely known and most effective teaching tools in the music literature market today. The books are available in five different levels of difficulty, ranging from the primer level up to level four. Available in each level are a wide variety of books including piano, performance, theory and technic method books, as well as many supplementary books including solos, hymns, and country. Each book ranges in price from $4 to $7, depending on the dealer and level.

Because most of a student's lesson will come from the piano methods and theory books, these are the only books I will require a student to own. Depending upon the needs of the student, I may ask him to complete a song or assignment from the performance or technic book in his particular level. In this case, the student will be allowed to utilize the books that I have available, under the condition that the student will reimburse me for damages to music from my personal library. In addition to the method books, each student will be responsible for individually purchasing a wide ruled or college ruled notebook for recording practice time and assignments.

I will be happy to purchase the required piano and theory books for a student in advance and add the cost to the monthly billing. This generally helps parents avoid confusion over which books to purchase, and where to find the particular books. I've found this also prevents a student from coming to his lesson without books, as sometimes the task of purchasing them is forgotten during the course of the week. Generally, it takes a student anywhere from six months to two years to complete one level of study in the Bastien series, taking into account the complementary songs and materials he may also be studying.

I firmly believe in allowing a student to prepare songs that will complement the concepts he is studying within the Bastien series. I don't want my students to feel restricted to only the set course materials and encourage them to bring music from home that they feel would be fun and challenging to study. I may not always agree that the material is appropriate for the student's skill level, but will make every attempt to find similar music at the right skill level that will be to the student's liking. As I get to know my students' individual tastes, I'll be better able to complement their Bastien course materials with songs that are both enjoyable and challenging.
